Our adventure begins as we depart from Cairo, heading towards Alexandria. During the comfortable journey, your guide will provide fascinating insights into the history and significance of Alexandria, setting the stage for the wonders you are about to discover.
Our first stop takes us to the renowned catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. These ancient tombs hold a mesmerizing blend of Pharaonic, Hellenistic, and Roman influences, showcasing the cultural fusion that Alexandria was known for during its heyday. As we explore the catacombs, your guide will paint a vivid picture of the burial rituals and beliefs of the time, bringing history to life before your eyes.
Next, we visit the iconic Pompey's Pillar, a towering monument that stands proudly atop a rocky hill. Contrary to its misleading name, this pillar has no connection to the Roman consul and General Pompey. Instead, it was erected as a triumphal monument in honor of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Standing at an impressive height of 100 feet (30 meters), this pillar provides a magnificent vantage point to take in the surrounding beauty of Alexandria.
Our journey continues to the Citadel of Quaitbay, a majestic fortress steeped in history. Built-in the 15th century by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Quaitbay, the citadel was strategically located at the mouth of the Eastern Harbour. As we explore its impressive walls and intricate architecture, your guide will regale you with tales of battles, conquests, and the significance of this fortress in Alexandria's past.
No visit to Alexandria would be complete without a visit to its modern gem, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This magnificent library stands as a symbol of Alexandria's cultural revival and its commitment to knowledge and education. Admire the striking architecture and explore the vast collection of books, manuscripts, and artifacts that make this library a treasure trove for scholars and book lovers alike.
After a day of exploration, it's time to satisfy your taste buds with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Indulge in the flavors of Alexandria as you savor authentic Egyptian cuisine, a culinary journey that complements the rich historical experiences of the day.
